Ventana Research Unveils 2017 Research Agenda for Business and Technology Markets

Veteran market research firm focused on applications and digital technology for business and IT releases comprehensive research agenda

BEND, OR, January 31, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ — Ventana Research, a cutting-edge business technology research and advisory services firm connecting users and providers of technology to improve business performance, today unveiled a sharply focused and far-reaching research and education agenda for 2017. This agenda, based on a continuation of the firm’s more than a decade of research and its analysts‘ extensive contacts with both buyers and users of business technology, details the research and functional areas the firm will focus on. The research this agenda details will make it possible for businesses to utilize their technology and resources efficiently and effectively to compete and perform well.

This research agenda, produced annually, is designed to enable businesses to plan and gain insights from trends and best practices so they can retain and advance their competitive edge in 2017. It also highlights the unique experience- and research fact-based services Ventana Research provides and distinguishes them from the less rigorous offerings of other advisory or consulting firms.

Ventana Research’s agenda for 2017 identifies a broad range of topics in the lines of business, IT organizations and vertical industries that will be addressed this year. The research will examine what the firm has identified as the key digital technology innovations that are changing the way business operates: analytics, big data, cloud computing, collaboration for business, cybersecurity, the Internet of Things, machine learning and cognitive computing, mobile technology, and wearable computing. The research will assess the impacts of these technologies in finance, human resources, sales, marketing, customer service, operations, supply chain and IT functions in more than 20 vertical industries.

This year as well, Ventana Research will continue to expand its vendor and technology-oriented Value Index assessments. This detailed product-oriented research utilizes the most comprehensive methodology in the industry to evaluate business systems and tools for suitability-to-task as well as to assess the information and support vendors provide. Findings are presented in an RFP-oriented format to help organizations reduce cost, time and risk in assessing applications and making technology choices.

This year the firm also introduces a new research product called Ventana Research Dynamic Insights, which will provide continuous research on focused topics of business interest every quarter while delivering to each research participant immediate guidance on best practices and steps to improve its efforts. The Dynamic Insights will be a major component of the research foundation that uniquely differentiates Ventana Research’s value for market research that educates and guides business and IT.

As the research agenda reveals, Ventana Research provides the most authoritative guidance available on best practices to support businesses in making informed technology choices, all based on a rigorous research methodology and experience gained from more than a dozen years in the industry. Ventana Research has benchmarked tens of thousands of organizations, differentiating it from any other analyst firm in the industry. Its research and education is provided directly to a community of members worldwide.

„In 2017 business decision-making will continue to shift from IT to business leaders, completely changing what kind of advice they need about what applications and technology are assessed and adopted and how it’s framed,“ said Mark Smith, CEO and chief research officer of Ventana Research. „But what will not change is that companies will need to ensure they are receiving the most authoritative advice and best practices guidance that helps improve business processes and performance – research-based information from a firm that engages with them and their peers and measures how they achieve these tasks. IT-focused analyst firms offering predictions limited by IT-led perspectives continue to mislead businesses rather than enabling them to effectively prioritize the application and digital technology investments that matter the most to their organization. The intelligence on the use and value of digital technology for businesses that will be delivered by Ventana Research in 2017 will help organizations drive best possible performance with their resources and time.“

„A line-of-business focus such as ours enables us to offer incisive guidance on aligning processes, whether industry-specific or not, with applications and technology,“ Smith said. „We are excited to again provide our publicly available research agenda, an agenda that’s built on research and our ongoing review of how applications and technologies actually work. We look at much more than vendor-provided information on products, customers, and revenue; we take a holistic approach evaluating technology for its usability, manageability, reliability and adaptability to business.“

Ventana Research’s 14 years of market research experience enables it to fill the need for high-quality, fact-based research to inform and educate business and technology buyers and suppliers. It is the only technology analyst firm that publicly posts its research agenda and framework for an entire year and provides free access to market research. Merely providing an analyst note or listing reports to be written does not constitute a useful research agenda; it merely announces the use of an approach that lacks a methodology built on fact-based market research and full product evaluations that discover the real needs and direction of business and IT. „Our market- and primary research-based approach more clearly than ever differentiates our firm from the array of others,“ Smith added.

For more information about the research agenda, please visit any of our expertise pages, Analytics, Big Data, Customer Experience, Digital Technology, Human Capital Management, Marketing, Office of Finance, Operations & Supply Chain, or Sales, and download the research agendas for business and technology areas most important to your needs now. Program-Ace Releases Its Latest Game, King of Juice

Program-Ace company has recently released a new casual game item for iOS, Android and Windows for Leap Motion – King of Juice.

KHARKIV, UKRAINE, January 31, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ — King of Juice is hitting the market and offering players a unique take on casual, arcade gaming by using the latest in motion capture technology. The goal of the game is simple – direct falling fruit into the correct basket in order to make the world’s most delicious juice. How the game is played, however, is deviously fun and maddeningly addicting. The result is a quick-paced and fun experience for families and friends to share, compete over and enjoy.

Integral to the game is its use of motion capture technology, which allows the program to track the user’s hand movements in real time. Because of this, the user doesn’t need to use a controller or even touch a screen. Instead, they can freely wave, flick and twist their hands in real life to direct the fruit in the right direction. As can be imagined, hilarity ensues as players try to wildly but accurately slap and flap at torrents of falling fruit.

Recognizing that not all users have motion capture devices like Leap Motion, Program-Ace includes a version for mobile devices (Android and iOS) in addition to the PC version. In the mobile version, users can use their fingers to swipe and sort fruit into the appropriate bucket.

Windows version of the game requires using hands with the Leap Motion controller.

Program-Ace is a software development company that specializes in providing outsourcing services to industry leaders from around the world. Making the most of its robust R&D department, Program-Ace uses cutting-edge technology in the fields of augmented, virtual and mixed reality to engineer innovative solutions across a diverse range of verticals and industries.

One-Year Mission Investigators Debut Preliminary Results at NASA Workshop

The first glimpses of research data from NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly’s year in space are out

HOUSTON, TX, January 31, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ — Preliminary research results for the NASA One-Year Mission debuted last week at an annual NASA conference. Last March, two men landed back on Earth after having spent nearly one year in space. NASA and Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, teamed up for an unprecedented One-Year Mission. One crewmember from each agency lived on the International Space Station for almost one year.

NASA’s Human Research Program’s annual Investigators‘ Workshop which was held in Galveston, Texas the week of January 23, provided an opportunity for researchers to release early findings for the One-Year Mission study. Only preliminary findings were released. Additional research analysis is in process.

Jacob Bloomberg presented results on the Functional Task Test, which gauges the astronauts‘ ability to perform tasks that they would be expected to do after landing on Mars. The tests found the crew had the greatest difficulties with performing tasks that demanded postural control and stability and muscle dexterity. However, most other measures did not show substantial differences between six-months and one-year flight duration changes. More subjects are needed for testing to confirm these results.

Millard Reschke and Inessa Kozlovskaya conducted the Field Test Investigation which tests postflight recovery times. The tests found that the two subjects had vastly different performance and recovery, despite spending equal time in space. These differences may be explained by their level of preflight training and experience. This finding suggests that a focus on training that engages with the Earth’s gravitational field is beneficial.

Michael Stenger is looking at Visual Impairment and Intracranial Pressure (VIIP). Some space station astronauts have reported vision problems postflight. The cause is not currently known. One crewmembers had „VIIP“ findings, including optic disc edema, choroidal folds and refractive error changes, while the other one-year mission crewmember did not. Several cardiovascular parameters, which were different between the two subjects, may be related to ocular outcomes, but more investigation is needed.

Kritina Holden’s investigation focuses on performance changes in Fine Motor Skills that might result from long-duration microgravity – particularly changes that might impact a future crew’s ability to perform accurately with computer-based devices once they transition to a planetary surface. The study, conducted on an Apple iPad, includes four types of fine motor tasks: pointing, dragging, shape tracing, and pinch-rotate. Preliminary results indicate that there are both accuracy and reaction time decrements during gravitational transitions.

Laura Barger researches Sleep-Wake Cycles in space station crewmembers. Her study found that the average sleep duration of the one-year crew was one hour longer than the nightly sleep duration of shorter station missions from 2004-2011 (7.1 hours versus 6.1 hours). Several factors may have improved their sleep including improved scheduling, less work shift changes and a lightened work load since the ISS construction is complete. Barger suggests sleep should continue to be evaluated on future one-year missions because two subjects do not provide enough data for confident predictions about sleep.

Rachael Seidler’s investigation focuses on Neurocognition Function and Neuromapping. This investigation found mobility changes appear comparable for the one-year mission subject versus six-month subjects, although recovery may be slower following the one-year mission. Despite similar behavioral changes, the longer duration flight subjects showed an increase in the number of brain regions involved when processing vestibular (inner ear) inputs.

Through further research by integrating the preliminary findings, in coordination with other physiological, psychological, and technological investigations, NASA and its partners will continue to ensure that astronauts undertake future space exploration missions safely, efficiently and effectively. A joint summary publication is planned for later in 2017, to be followed by research articles by the investigators.

NASA’s Human Research Program enables space exploration by reducing the risks to human health and performance through a focused program of basic, applied, and operational research. This leads to the development and delivery of: human health, performance, and habitability standards; countermeasures and risk mitigation solutions; and advanced habitability and medical support technologies.

How Stressful Will a Trip to Mars be on the Human Body? We Now Have a Peek Into What the NASA Twins Study Will Reveal

Twins Study Investigators Debut Preliminary Results at NASA Workshop

HOUSTON, TX, January 31, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ — Preliminary research results for the NASA Twins Study debuted at NASA’s Human Research Program’s annual Investigators‘ Workshop in Galveston, Texas the week of January 23. NASA astronaut Scott Kelly returned home last March after nearly one year in space living on the International Space Station. His identical twin brother, Mark, remained on Earth.

Researchers found this to be a great opportunity for a nature versus nurture study, thus the Twins Study was formed. Using Mark, a retired NASA astronaut, as a ground-based control subject, ten researchers are sharing biological samples taken from each twin before, during and after Scott’s mission. From these samples, knowledge is gained as to how the body is affected by extended time in space. These studies are far from complete. Additional research analysis is in process.

Mike Snyder, the Integrated Omics investigator, reported altered levels of a panel of lipids in Scott (the flight twin) that indicate inflammation. Additionally, there was an increased presence of 3-indolepropionic (IPA) in Mark (the ground-based twin). This metabolite is known to be produced only by bacteria in the gut and is being investigated as a potential brain antioxidant therapeutic. IPA is also known to help maintain normal insulin activity to regulate blood sugar after meals.

Susan Bailey’s investigation focuses on Telomeres and Telomerase. It is understood that when looked at over many years, telomeres decrease in length as a person ages. Interestingly, on a time scale of just one year, Bailey found Scott’s telomeres on the ends of chromosomes in his white blood cells increased in length while in space. This could be linked to increased exercise and reduced caloric intake during the mission. However, upon his return to Earth they began to shorten again. Interestingly, telomerase activity (the enzyme that repairs the telomeres and lengthens them) increased in both twins in November, which may be related to a significant, stressful family event happening around that time.

Mathias Basner’s study, Cognitive Performance in Spaceflight, is looking at cognition, especially the difference found during a 12-month mission as compared to six-month missions. Following the one-year mission, he found a slight decrease in speed and accuracy post mission. Overall, however, the data does not support a relevant change in cognitive performance inflight by increasing the mission duration from six to 12 months.

In the Biochemical Profile investigation, headed by Scott Smith, there appeared to be a decline in bone formation during the second half of Scott’s mission. Also, by looking at C Reactive Protein levels (a widely accepted biochemical marker for inflammation), there appeared to be a spike in inflammation soon after landing, likely related to the stresses of reentry and landing. The stress hormone Cortisol was low normal throughout the one-year mission, but IGF-1 hormone levels increased over the course of the year. This hormone is implicated with bone and muscle health and was likely impacted by heavy exercise countermeasures during flight.

Fred Turek’s focus is on the Microbiome in the GI Tract – or „bugs“ naturally found in the gut to aid in digestion. Differences in the viral, bacterial, and fungal microbiome between the twins were pronounced at all time points; however, this was expected due to their differing diet and environment. Of interest were the differences in microbial species observed in Scott on the ground versus his time in space. One shift was a change in ratio of two dominant bacterial groups (i.e., Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes) present in his GI tract. The ratio of one group to the other increased during flight and returned to pre-flight levels upon return to Earth.

Emmanuel Mignot’s investigation, Immunome Studies, looks at changes in the body before and after a flu vaccine was administered to each twin. Following flu vaccines, „personalized“ T cell receptors were created. These unique T cell receptors increased in both twins which was the expected immune response that protects from catching the flu.

Chris Mason is performing Genome Sequencing on the DNA and RNA contained within the twins‘ white blood cells with his investigation. Whole genome sequencing was completed and showed each twin has hundreds of unique mutations in their genome, which are normal variants. RNA (transcriptome) sequencing showed more than 200,000 RNA molecules that were expressed differently between the twins. They will look closer to see if a „space gene“ could have been activated while Scott was in space.

Andy Feinberg studies Epigenomics, or how the environment regulates our gene expression. In the DNA within Scott’s white blood cells, he found that the level of methylation, or chemical modifications to DNA, decreased while inflight – including a gene regulating telomeres, but returned to normal upon return. On the ground, Mark’s level of methylation in the DNA derived from his white blood cells increased at midpoint in the study but returned to normal in the end. Variability was observed in the methylation patterns from both twins; however, this epigenetic noise was slightly higher in Scott during spaceflight and then returned to baseline levels after return to Earth. These results could indicate genes that are more sensitive to a changing environment whether on Earth or in space.

Through further research integrating these preliminary findings, in coordination with other physiological, psychological, and technological investigations, NASA and its partners will continue to ensure that astronauts undertake future space exploration missions safely, efficiently and effectively. A joint summary publication is planned for later in 2017, to be followed by investigator research articles.

Fourth Quarter 2016 Market Review

Sloy, Dahl & Holst, Inc. provides a review of the fourth quarter of 2016.

PORTLAND, OR, January 30, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ — The fourth quarter of 2016 finished in a flurry to the upside for equity markets, with the S&P 500 rallying nearly 5% from November 9th to December 31st. As everyone knows, this was mostly a result of the market’s knee-jerk reaction, often referred to as the „Trump rally“, to the surprising results of the presidential election. Sectors that had been beaten up and held down the last few years, especially Financials, popped on expectations of significant changes to the current business and economic environments (i.e. smaller government and less regulation). We also experienced the first rapid-rising interest rate environment since late 2013, which created quick and measurable damage to interest rate sensitive areas such as Bonds, Real Estate Investment Trusts and Utilities. Aside from the Trump rally, we also saw another quarter of earnings expectations that proved too low. The majority of companies reporting, beat this low bar again, and we actually saw an earnings increase for the first time in over a year. All-in-all, the fourth quarter was great for long-term equity investors and especially those who have positioned their portfolios to protect against rising interest rates.

Just because the fourth quarter finished so well for equities, and we’ve started 2017 on the same foot, that doesn’t mean this next year will be simple or easy. There are a lot of unknowns and uncertainties about where we go from here, and how a Trump presidency will continue to shake things up. We do believe it will be a good year for equities in the end, however, and expect a clear tone of optimism through fourth quarter earnings reports and forecasts that should bode very well for stocks in the first half of 2017.

Listed below are returns of five major indexes, through the fourth quarter;

BarCap US Agg Bond — 2.65%
S&P 500 — 11.96%
Russell 2000 — 21.31%
MSCI EAFE (Europe) — 1.00%
MSCI EM (Emerging Markets) — 11.19%

All five of our model portfolios held within our 401k plans, added measurable outperformance in the fourth quarter, with positions in Financials, Energy and domestic Small Cap stocks leading the way. We expect these three areas to continue their strong run in 2017; especially Financials and Energy, which had lagged significantly for nearly three consecutive years. It has now been seven years of underperformance from international stocks, compared to the U.S. This stretch follows seven years of prior outperformance from Europe and Emerging Markets, while domestic stocks sat stagnant. We’ve been saying this for a quite some time, and will stick by it; international equities are poised for a period of significant outperformance. Those who remain patient and steadfast in areas of value, even when it becomes challenging, will ultimately be rewarded. This is very similar to the recent and long overdue move we’re seeing in the Financials sector.

We have significant confidence in our current allocations, and believe the next 12-24 months will be exceptional for our portfolios. Thank you for your continued confidence and support. As always, please feel free to contact us directly if there’s anything we can do to help.

Happy New Year!
